![]() There are some weeks or even sometimes 2 weeks where the people who bring Meals On Wheels to me are the only people I see. I didn't grow up with Shabbat dinners and I really wish I had, so I think this would be a nice tradition for your kids. Some halakhic authorities say it is allowed to use electric lights so there's precedent for this if you want to try electric ones.Įta one other idea is to do every other Friday night at home with traditional candle lighting and a traditional Shabbat dinner so your kids can grow up experiencing Shabbat dinners, and then every other Friday go to shul. Or you could consider using electric ones or extinguishing them, but I think even to Reform and Recon Jews extinguishing them wouldn't feel right. If you can't safely leave the candles lit when you're not home, perhaps you could get small candles that only burn for a short time and light them right after you get home from work. ![]() Personally I think it would be more meaningful to light before you leave for services, so that you're bringing in Shabbat early and putting yourself in a Shabbat mindset before you leave. I'm assuming you're Reform or Recon and not looking for an answer based in traditional interpretations of halakha. Other related subs #weeklytopic: Our Discord!!
